hi!
i’m Vyolet, and i’m a multidisciplinary artist from Chicago. i work primarily in comics, illustration and printmaking.

I use my transfixions on loss, religious spirituality, adolescent human condition, humor and mundane loneliness to fuel the narratives I write in my work. My cartooning’s comedic, cute simplistic style acts as a guise of the weight of the stories told. I am inspired by the everyday human condition and how we wrestle with daily and long-form grief through humor, intimacy and routine.

I am heavily influenced by independent-press underground comics, tattooing, Japanese illustration and mangakas, street art, surrealism, video games, cats, my psychology studies, and the experiences from my childhood and adolescence in public school in Chicago.

I alternate between highly detailed illustration and rudimentary caricatures to encapsulate the varying levels of gravity and humor in different situations in my personal life or with fictional stories and characters I write. I find that when making comics about more serious experiences in my life, I draw more goofy, and I use it to see the twisted humor in what would otherwise be upsetting.
